ABOUT AVERT, AVERTing AIDS and HIV

Graphic Version of the Heading

What is AVERT?

AVERT is an international HIV and AIDS charity based in the UK, working to AVERT HIV and AIDS worldwide.

AVERT has HIV and AIDS projects in countries where there is a particularly high rate of infection, such as South Africa, or where there is a rapidly increasing rate of infection such as in India.

We also take AIDS education and information to people in almost every country in the world through our web site, www.avert.org, the world's most popular AIDS website.

AVERT's Work in Southern Africa

Some areas of Southern Africa have an alarmingly high rate of HIV infection and thousands are dying from AIDS. AVERT is concentrating on these areas not only to prevent new infections, but also to help those who are already directly affected by HIV and AIDS.

AVERT has a number of HIV and AIDS projects in South Africa, Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique.

AVERT's Work in India

AVERT also works with people affected by HIV and AIDS in India. Our project in Sangli promotes HIV awareness education and testing for sex workers and truck drivers. You can read more about AVERT's HIV and AIDS work in India.

If you would like to support AVERT's work in Southern Africa and India, we have a donations area where you can help.

AVERT's newsletter

AVERT has a newsletter detailing our recent work.

If you would like to receive our newsletter twice a year by post or by email, please email us at info@avert.org, or call us on 01403 210 202.

The AVERT web site, www.avert.org

As the use of the internet continues to spread around the world, so the number of people using AVERT.org continues to grow, and the site is now the most popular HIV/AIDS web site in the world.

"Thanks so much - you have absolutely changed my life for the better! You will never understand how much you have helped me."

- Liam

Developed over a number of years AVERT.org now has a wide range of information that includes not only basic factual information about HIV/AIDS and its spread around the world but also specific areas for young people and interactive quizzes. We also have a recent development on the website: an extensive photo gallery containing more than a thousand images relating to HIV & AIDS.

If you want to see more of the site, you can start from our home page or read our introductory what is AIDS? page.

Whilst the statistics show that two million pages are viewed every month, it is sometimes what people say that shows the real impact of the website.

"Thanks so much - you have absolutely changed my life for the better! You will never understand how much you have helped me." - Liam

In November 2005 AVERT.org was selected by the British Medical Association (BMA) as the winner of the BMA Patient Information Award for Websites. The website was praised by judges for being “very well referenced, information rich and possessing a clean look”.

Where does AVERT's money come from?

AVERT has two main sources of funds: public donations, and the income on an endowment given to the charity by Annabel Kanabus, soon after Annabel helped to start AVERT in 1986. Annabel still works as the volunteer Director of AVERT. AVERT receives no government funding.

This is what Annabel has to say about her gift to AVERT

"I was very fortunate to inherit from my late father, Sir Robert Sainsbury, a large number of shares in the 'J.Sainsbury' supermarket chain. I wanted to use most of this money to help other people, particularly to help with a problem still ignored by so many, and so in 1988 I gave AVERT 'my piece of Sainsburys', consisting at that time of shares worth several million pounds."
"I have done everything I can financially to help AVERT, and to help with AVERTing HIV and AIDS. I have no more money, and no more shares that I can give, so I am now asking other people to give what they can spare, however much or however little it is, to help to combat the terrible problem of AIDS worldwide."

How can you help AVERT?

If you can spare some money, whatever the sum, then please provide a donation that will help support AVERT's work. There are also a number of other ways that you can help AVERT.

How is AVERT organised?

Some of AVERT's work is carried out directly by AVERT's staff, whilst other work is done by a wide variety of individuals and organisations who are given funding by AVERT. For this reason, and also in order to keep administration costs as low as possible, AVERT is able to have just one office, which is at Horsham, in the south of England, and just nine permanent staff. AVERT is registered in England, Charity No. 1074849, Company No. 3716796. AVERT was started in 1986.
