Safer Internet Day (SID) 2013: 'Connect with Respect'
Celebrated this week, on 5 February and across 90 countries worldwide, Safer Internet Day is about bringing social rights and responsibilities to the Internet.
The ever-increasing array of new technologies grants us the opportunity to reach out and socialise with friends, join networks and stay on top of the latest news and trends. But are we doing things we wouldn’t dream of doing offline?
Strike a sexy pose for a stranger or share your personal details with someone you’ve just met…It’s unlikely you would do any of these in real life, but when it comes to technology, many people’s personal boundaries can inadvertently change. Many people find sexting or cybering fun, and getting as many “likes” or “friends” a challenge – even if you don’t know them.
Like many other young people, this might be something you like to do. But to ensure you get all the fun and none of the risk, take the time to know how to keep yourself and your friends safe. Think twice before sending a sexual image or message to someone through the Internet or a phone…they could do anything with it, at any time. Get to grips with your social media security settings and be wary about meeting people you only know from the Internet.
The Internet can be used for both good and bad– but you have control over what you use it for. Safe Internet Day not only reminds us to stay safe and respect others online, but to use the Internet to do creative and positive things.
Through our GetPluggedIn campaign, AVERT are seeking to empower young people to use different forms of technology as HIV prevention and sex education tools. With 1.6 billion people worldwide, aged between 12-24 years, we believe today’s generation of young people have the power to harness the Internet to bring about positive behaviour change. So why not read more about our campaign and let us know if you would like to get involved by emailing info@avert.org.
Our Sex, the Internet and Technology page has some great facts and tips about social networking, sex, and meeting people safely.
